From the forest emerged a decaying complex of buildings that once housed socially stunted and mentally unstable children. Broken windows and vandalism are rampant at this site.
With declining conditions after decades of operation, the families of many patients filed lawsuits against the hospital for reasons of physical and sexual abuse, neglect, poor living conditions — even medical testing.
In the small, basement morgue, the bodies of the children who had died, many of aspiration pneumonia – a condition that occurs when food enters the respiratory system – after having been fed while laying in their beds, were autopsied and interred in unmarked graves on the complex grounds. More recently, it was reported that some of those graves have suffered from erosion and are becoming uncovered.
